In an exploration to connect with my own culture through the lenses of land, material, and object, I developed a brand being, visual identity, and awareness campaign for UNCMMN. The debut collection launched in Spring 2016 in collaboration with founder + product designer Funi Ding.
UNCMMN is an artisan product brand that uses uncommon materials to make common objects. Dedicated to infusing heritage and contemporary design, the brand strives to make obscure cultural anecdotes and hard to find materials universally accessible to inspire quality slow living. Through form, craft, and material, UNCMMN products enhance daily routines — highlighting the quiet moments of the day.
Our debut collection features upscale stoneware using purple clay, a rare material that can only be found in Yixing, China. Purple clay has a porous nature, naturally enriching the flavor of tea with each brew, making it a treasured medium for pottery making. For UNCMMN's first collection, we partnered with local artisans to create several series of tableware, all inspired by Yixing’s famous scenic landscapes.

During the initial research phase of developing UNCMMN, we interviewed Ding, who is a native of Yixing, China, the only place in the world purple clay can be found. He explains the relationship between the material and the land's history, unique intricacies of different kinds of purple clay, techniques of handmade stoneware, and more.
